The British Museum's famous Jennings Dog statue has had a temporary export ban placed upon it to allow the museum time to raise the £662,000 necessary to purchase the sculpture. The dog, which is a Roman marble copy of a lost Greek original, was first brought to England in the 18th century, and spawned offspring throughout the country, being widely copied from its position in the palatial hall at Duncombe Park in Yorkshire. If the museum is unable to purchase the sculpture, it is most likely to be snapped up by a collector in America.
