The CA$20m (US$19m, €14m, £11m) conversion development of a spa property on the Canadian Prince Edward Island is scheduled to resume after the owner took stakeholders on an 18-day tour of China to enhance plans for the resort.
Sean Liu, a Chinese businessman living in Toronto, purchased the 50 acres of land on which the future Prince Alex Resort and Convention centre will be located in 2005. Liu is converting the site’s former structure – known as the Dynasty Spa.
After an 18-day trip to China with a small group of interested parties – with visits to 14 cities and nine hotel experiences – a new design is being drafted for the building which will include a whole new wing.
The rooftop of the round two-storey 7,000sq ft (650sq m) structure is being re-drafted and is set to include a restaurant, boutique and gift area.
Initially the resort was to feature 96 rooms, but the new proposed wing will increase the five-star accommodation facilities to 116 bedrooms, according to local press.
“The construction of the new wing was supposed to be delayed until the resort had opened, but Liu decided he would do it now and do it all” said Nicolle Morrison, co-broker/ owner of the realty group involved in the development called Century 21 Northumberland Realty.
“As the interior is so much more complicated, specialists are being brought in to help. If Liu proceeds at full capacity the resort would be ready in December of 2015 but he doesn’t want to open then,” Morrison added.
“It will open in June 2016 so we have an extra six or seven months to prevent being pushed into opening too early,” Morrison continued.
The outside shell of the resort will be completed later this year.
The restaurant and spa will be open to the public.
